Welcome

About the blog: This blog is intended to document progress on one of my biggest projects yet, the refurbishing of an old ultralight. I got a great deal on this plane because the previous owner did not want to deal with the Experimental Light-Sport certification process. But since I work on such certification daily, it's no big deal to push through the paperwork.

About me: I'm an old GA pilot that transitioned to ultralights about in March. I recently graduated from UT Austin and now I'm working as a flight instructor/mechanic/manager at Sport Pilot USA in San Antonio, Texas (Kitty Hawk Airfield).

About the plane: This is an old but flyable Quicksilver MX Super. These planes were made only in 1984 and and only about 70 kits were sold, mostly to dealers. The plane is capable of limited aerobatics (pretty much everything but tail-slides) due to its thicker-than-normal tubes and wire bracing.

About the project: Thanks in very large part to my parents, I was able to buy this plane under the condition that I
  1. make it work
  2. make it safe as an original
  3. increase its value
My plan is to make it perfect. I've sent off the certification papers (which presumably has increased the value by about a thousand bucks already) and I've started to tear into the plane. I will try to keep this blog up to date as I work on the Super. Here's a photo of the plane as I bought it. I know it's ugly, but give it time. You'll see.
